2012 Canadian New Vehicles Sales Nearly Hit Record High

Despite a 4.9% drop in December month-over-month sales, new vehicles sales in Canada saw an overall gain of 5.7% in 2012.  The December monthly loss was due to an 11.2% reduction in light truck and SUV sales, as cars posted a 4.4% gain.  For the year, however, cars were up 9.5% and light trucks up just 2.7%.  Import nameplates captured all the annual growth at 11.2%, with domestic nameplates dropping 0.4%.

These statistics mean that 2012 Canadian auto sales hit their second-best year on record, despite the slower sales seen in the final months of 2012.  Overall, there were 1.67 million new vehicles sold, just under the record of 1.7 million reached in 2002.  DesRosiers Automotive Consultants believes that, although 2012 was a strong year, "the Canadian market still hasn't reached its potential."  Hoping for an increase of two or three percent next year, DesRosiers suggests that Canadian new vehicle sales can hit an all-time record in 2013 if the increase is met.
