My shipper says 1/4 tank of gas max—is this for weight or fire safety? Also, should I disable my motion alarm to stop the battery from dying during the trip? I want to avoid onboard computer issues.

In 2026, the “¼ tank rule” is standard and driven by both safety and logistics, not just weight. Carriers limit fuel to reduce fire risk, prevent leaks from temperature changes, and keep total trailer weight under control. As for alarms, you should always disable them before shipping—motion sensors can trigger repeatedly during transit, draining the battery or forcing the driver to disconnect it, which may cause onboard electronics issues. Most shippers may also recommend disconnecting the battery for long hauls.
